Quote by the head of the laboratory: If we compare synthetic materials with natural compounds and tissues, it is obvious that the latter achieve their often superior functionality by means of complex organization of a limited number of construction blocks while materials technology relies on a broad variety of classes of synthetic compounds. Achieving structural complexity characteristic of biological materials implies transition from rather homogeneous to functionally multi-component systems. At the Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences we started preparing molecular construction blocks such as polysiloxane block copolymers and nanoobjets with precisely set qualities such as, for example, ability for self-restoration and shape memory. Organosilicon and polymer chemistry give broad opportunities for creating materials with new properties thanks to high molecular complexity and formation of superstructures.
