General information

Name of the project: Technologies of hydrogen energy generation

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: б

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Energy industry, energy efficiency, energy preservation

Project objective: Research of physical properties of «metal-hydrogen» systems under external impact and development of new technological processes that increase operational lifespan of construction materials of the hydrogen energy industry

The practical value of the study

  • We manufactured plasma beam equipment with software for producing multi-layer structures of solid oxide fuel cells (maximum power density of fuel cells produced using this method at the temperature of 650°C is 200–250 mW/cm2). Plasma beam equipment is ready for commercial implementation.
  • The Laboratory created a new type of ion-exchange membranes for fuel cells possessing high technological and economical parameters. Realization of this part of the project is based on usage of unique acceleration equipment of the Tomsk Polytechnic University – the Р7М cyclotron and the ESG 2,5 electrostatic generator.
  • Our researchers have developed methods of accumulation of hydrogen in sub-microcrystalline titanium samples, low temperature removal of hydrogen and restoration of properties of construction materials.

Implemented results of research:

  • Fuel cells produced by the Laboratory can be used in cars and aircraft for increasing their ecological safety as well as can be utilized as an auxiliary power sources for low-rise buildings.
  • Using this technology, three buses have been built for the government of Iceland. Similar vehicles have been ordered by the United Kingdom, Germany and Portugal.
