Developing and implementing supercomputer technologies to solve a wide range of current fundamental and theoretical problems in nonlinear optics, plasma physics and astrophysics characterized by high density of electromagnetic energy

Project objective:

Developing and implementing supercomputer technologies to solve a wide range of current fundamental and theoretical problems in nonlinear optics, plasma physics and astrophysics characterized by high density of electromagnetic energy

The practical value of the study

  • Our researchers have modeled propagation of powerful laser pulses in plasma that occurs during ionization solid target in a situation when radiation and quantum electrodynamical effects become substantial. Corresponding share of laser energy transitioning to gamma-quants, electrons, ions, and positrons has been computed.
  • We have demonstrated viability of using a series of laser pulses to accelerate particles in periodical plasma structures
  • Our Laboratory has calculated processes of ionization of atoms, acceleration of electrons and generation of terahertz radiation during ionization of gases by intense laser pulses of various spectral composition
  • The Laboratory's researchers have analyzed processes of resonance interaction of photons and electrons in plasma with qualities characteristic to compact stars.
  • Our team has modeled formation of plasma flows in atmospheres of neutron stars and magnetic field white dwarf under pressure of radiation in the gyro resonance line.

Implemented results of research:

  • The developed computational software is used for interpreting results of experiments in generating teraHertz radiation, gamma radiation and beams of accelerated ions during interactions of powerful laser pulses with gas and solid targets on terawatt laser systems and the PEARL2 petawatt device.
  • The achieved results explain a broad range of peculiarities in spectrums of isolated neutron stars in remnants of supernovae as well as explain features of cyclotron lines in spectrums of accretion-powered X-ray pulsars

Education and career development:

  • The Laboratory has organized 2 international and 4 regional scientific scools in our area of studies
  • 2 doctoral dissertations and 6 candidate dissertations have been defended
  • 7 young professionals from other organizations have completed internships at the Laboratory
  • We have developed and implemented 4 new study courses: «Electrodynamics of high frequency and optical pulses», «Radiation and propagation of electromagnetic waves in magnetically active plasma», «Electrodynamics of plasma», «Oscillations and waves in plasma mediums».
  • Our team has published 3 textbooks

Organizational and structural changes:

  • Significant increase in efficiency of scientific and pedagogical work at the Nizhniy Novgorod State University that has been achieved by strengthening of scientific exchange and cooperation with research centers around the world, increasing publication activity, development of new studying courses, defenses of dissertations in our area of studies, creation of patient worthy products of intellectual property, organazing new research seminars
  • Attracting significant funding to the Nizhniy Novgorod State University, both budgetary and non-budgetary, increase of salaries and creation of new workplaces, introduction of new young researchers to academia and reducing average age of scientific and pedagogical staff at the University.
  • Infrastructural development of the University has been aided by equipping the Laboratory with modern highly productive computational equipment

Other results:

  • 16 objects of intellectual property have been registered by the state
  • 51 article has been published in scientific issues indexed by the Web of Science database
  • 7 commercial contracts have been completed

Collaborations:

  • University of Düsseldorf (Germany), Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Science (Russia): joint research and scientific events
  • International Center for Zetta-Exawatt Science and Technology (France), Moscow Engineering Physics Institute – MePhi (Russia): joint research and scientific publications
