General information

Name of the project: Returning to Europe: Russian elites and European innovations, norms and models (18th century – early 20th century)

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: ж

Goals and objectives

Research directions: History and archaeology

Project objective:

- Review the phenomenon of return of Russia into the cultural and political space of Europe in the 18th – 20th centuries as a multi-factor process.

- Study of the process of «europeanization», main channels and mechanisms of penetration and adaptation of European models and practices into daily life as well as intellectual and cultural spheres, reaction of central and local elites of Russia to European innovations

The practical value of the study

  • The Laboratory has developed 2 explanatory theoretical models:

1) A model of anthropological reconstruction of the process of adaptation of Western novelties in the environment of the Russian elite of the imperial period;

2) a model of communicative fields of routinization of innovative processes.

  • We have created and tested a number of intermediate methods and models that are suitable for systematization,   understanding and aggregation of large arrays of empirical materials: a method of synchronous opposite adaptations, a principle of hierarchy of elites as a mediative target of transfer and adaptation of novelties of the Western modern type, two models of adaptation of innovations (exemplification and targeted modernism) and others.
  • We have created and registered the following databases: «Translations of moral, social and political literature in Russ in the 18th century», «European technological innovations in publications of the “Mining journal“ 19th century – early 20th century;», «Russian students at the Heidelberg University (Germany), 19th century – early 20th century», «Panegyric poems of the 18th century published in Russian», «Metallurgy plant of the Urals region, 19th – 20th centuries», «Foreign professionals at the Zlatoust arms factory in the first half of the 18th century», «Cartographic documents of the Urals mining administration in the first half of the 18th century», «Reflection of European influence on Russian pre-revolution religious periodical publications (exemplified by the “Christian reading“ journal), 1868-1917.
