Academic degree
Doctor of Technical Sciences
Field of studies
Professor in chemical reaction engineering (Åbo Akademi University)
Academy Professor (Academy of Finland)
Areas of scientific interest: chemical reaction engineering, process intensification, catalysis.
Last time the interests of Prof. T. Salmi have been extended towards the effects of microwave activation in catalytic processes, especially with participation of hydrogen and oxygen. The current research is focused basically on the conversion of renewable raw materials derived from biomass. such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The major attention is paid to the mechanisms of three-phase catalytic processes under non-equilibrium conditions, methodology of characterization of catalysts, development of structured catalysts and intensification of catalytic processes under the action of ultrasound and microwave radiation.
