General information

Name of the project: High-temperature plasma physics

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: б

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion in facilities with magnetic retention

Project objective: Research of physics of improved retention of hot plasma in tokamaks as the basis for energy nuclear fusion reactors including the international ITER facility, as well as of thermonuclear neutron sources and hybrid fusion-fission system

The practical value of the study

  • We have determined key parameters for modernization of the «Globus-M» spherical tokamak. On the basis of analysis of processes of transfer and research of efficiency of external heating we have come to a conclusion that it is necessary to increase the magnetic field of the «Globus-M2» facility. The magnetic field will be more than doubled which will promote «Globus-M2» to the list of the leading facilities of this type in the world.
  • We have researched the divertor configuration of the tokamak. The ITER tokamak and future neutron sources based on tokamaks will rely on this configuration.
  • Our researchers have developed the unique computation code B2SOLPS5.3 for modeling near-wall plasma of ITER and other reactors.

Implemented results of research: The Laboratory has contributed to formation of the program of research in nuclear fusion at the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences that corresponds to the Russian strategy of work and will allow to achieve important results ensuring world-wide recognition.

Education and career development: The Laboratory has organized lectures by invited professors at the International School for Additional Training in Plasma Physics

Other results:

  • The International Consulting Committee of the Laboratory has been created.
  • We have organized the International Meeting on Thermonuclear Neutron Sources.
