General information

Name of the project: Research in space experiments of the era of reionization of the Universe by registration of gamma splashes and their subsequent glow (observed cosmology)

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: е

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Research of the early Universe and particularly of the era of «space sunrise» – the era when the light from the first generation of stars began producing reionization of the neutral intergalactic environment

Project objective: Creation of satellites for detecting gamma splashes in the outer space, exploration of the most distant objects of the Universe that have formed during the period of formation of the first stars, galaxies and black holes. Development of experimental on-board equipment units for monitoring space gamma splashes. Development of software for numerical modeling configuration and operational characteristics of the prototypes of telescopes «GAMMASCOP» and «GROM-S» as well as a programs for testing this software.

The practical value of the study

  • We have developed software for supporting production, calibration and flight testing of the devices «GAMMASCOP» and «GROM-S», including: software for processing telemetry information in automatic mode, software for express processing for telemetry information and real-time analysis of results of registration of experimental information and software serving the database and the archiving systems for accumulated experimental information.
  • The Laboratory has developed a concept of creation of an experimental sample of the database for storage and processing of information on neutral radiation flows registered on Russian spacecraft.
  • We have launched a high-altitude aerostat with the POGOLITE polarimeter. The satellite will circulate along a circumpolar trajectory around the North Pole at the altitude of 40 kilometers. It will measure polarization of gamma radiation from astrophysical objects in the range between 10 and 100 keV.
  • We have developed a prototype of the «GAMMASCOP» device for usage as part of «UFFO-100».

Implemented results of research:

  • Developed equipment was used in the «Lomonosov» satellite that was launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on 28 April 2016.
  • The LOADSAT unified system for loading scientific telemetry into the space experiments database and the DBSAT database of measurements of charged particle flows on orbits of Russian spacecraft is used by the D. V. Skobeltsyn Research Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Moscow State University for conducting space research, quick monitoring of the radiation situation.

Collaborations: Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory (USA), National Centre for Space Studies (France), Institute for the Early Universe (South Korea): joint research
