General information
Name of the project:

Biorestoration of contaminated soil ecosystems
Goals and objectives
Goals of project:

Developing new key technologies for the biorestoration of contaminated soil ecosystems.

Project objective:

  1. Sources of soil contamination by pollutants, their behavior, environmental risk assessment and the human health.
  2. Developing key technologies to improve the adaptive potential of contaminated soil ecosystems and testing these technologies in the setting of vegetation experiments.
  3. Testing key technologies for the biorestoration of contaminated ecosystems in field experiments.
Research directions: Earth sciences
The practical value of the study
Planned project results:

  1. A characterization of sources of soil contamination, the behaviors of pollutants, an assessment of risks for the environment and the human health. A description of geochemical anomalies of the contained amount of high-priority pollutants and paragenetic associations of compounds made of elements characteristic of exhaust and waste coming from various enterprises and factories. A characterization of carcinogenic and general toxic hazards in the context of the influence of high-priority contaminants on the health of the population. A characterization of developed methods of extraction of bioavailable compounds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils – key technologies for increasing the adaptation potential of contaminated soil ecosystems. A description of a technology for producing biosorbents from sewage water sediments and nanocomposites, new strains of microorganisms and biopreparations created on their basis. Algorithms for the study of key metabolic pathways of soil microbiomes in the event of chemical contamination. A description of a technology for repairing the ecological functions of soils under anthropogenic stress.
  2. Results of testing of key technologies of biorestoration of contaminated ecosystems. A system for diagnosing the state of soils exposed to anthropogenic influence. Recommendations for the application of key technologies of biorestoration of soils exposed to anthropogenic load.
  3. A world-class laboratory under the supervision of a leading scientist from the People's republic of China – professor Wong Ming Hung.
