Senior research fellow, head of the Functional Imaging and Nanomaterials Laboratory of the University of Aveiro (Portugal)
One of the recent breakthrough discoveries by Prof. Kholkin is the discovery of a strong piezoelectric effect on the interface of a graphene monolayer related to the formation of polar C-O bonds upon contact with silicon dioxide and the observation of the ferroelectric phase in thin hydroxyapatite films that were earlier considered nonpolar. This discovery can directly influence the development of materials for bone tissue regeneration, as these materials have a similar structure.
