Goals and objectives

Goals of project:

  1. Analysis of the genome and transcriptome of Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc pig breeds to identify new genetic markers of economically valuable traits and develop effective post-genomic approaches for targeted breeding, DNA profiling and obtaining lines with new characteristics.
  2. Foundation of a science school for genomic and post-genomic research in the field of livestock production in the Republic of Bashkortostan

Project objective:

  1. Establishment of a biobank of DNA and RNA from tissues of purebred animals with target traits.
  2. Search for informative biomarkers associated with resistance and susceptibility to economically significant diseases and economically valuable traits using GWAS, genome and transcriptome sequencing.
  3. Identification of genes involved in the formation of economically valuable traits of animals using combined whole-genome and transcriptome studies.
  4. Development of approaches to improve economic traits of animals using genetic engineering and genome editing.
  5. Development of new approaches complementary to classical genomic breeding of livestock using post-genomic data, including biochemical, proteomic and transcriptomic markers and alleles directly related to the control of genetic expression.
  6. Development of a new digital platform SwineTSS_Russia as a set of multi-omics data: genetic digital atlases of gene expression, allele-specific expression and activity of regulatory elements of the genome associated with useful traits of pigs.
  7. Retrospective analysis of metadatabases on phenotypes and other characteristics of pigs for identification and subsequent genomic and post-genomic study of animals with the most contrasting traits to determine the genetic basis of phenotypic manifestations.
  8. Development of educational programs and arrangement of internships to teach young specialists modern methods of targeted breeding, transcriptome analysis and genome editing.

The practical value of the study

Planned project outcomes:

As a result of this project, a collection of DNA and tissue-specific RNA of Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc DanBred pigs with the studied traits will be established. Analysis of this collection will allow to develop genetic technologies for improvement of the efficiency of livestock production in the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Russian Federation:

  1. Approaches for identification of animals with the studied traits (absence of diseases, high efficiency in meat production, etc.) for genomic breeding;
  2. methods for determining economically significant diseases and traits of animals, such as lameness, cannibalism, and predisposition to them;
  3. technologies for genetic improvement of animals to impart new traits to them;
  4. systematically replenished digital genetic resources reflecting multi-omics data of pigs with various contrasting phenotypes.
