General information

Name of the project: Biogeochemistry of ecosystems of Eurasia

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: ж

Goals and objectives
Research directions: Experimental and theoretical research of the carbon budget, including greenhouse and dispersed gases, for ecosystems of Eurasia, development and implementation of a multi-sensor concept of application of remote probing data for spatial analysis and modeling of the carbon and greenhouse gases budget, as well as productivity of ecosystems of Eurasia in the context of the observed climate

Project objective: Evaluation of the role of ecosystems of Eurasia in the carbon balance based on experimental data, including results of remote probing and theoretical research
The practical value of the study

  • We have proven potential of radial parenchyma for amending chronologies of width of wood annual growth rings as a tool for climate reconstruction (Olano et al. 2013).
  • Our researchers have studied the impact of environmental conditions on growth of trees and other anatomical features along climate gradients in drought hardy environments (Arzac et al. 2016, 2018a) and cold environments as a continuous permafrost zone (Arzac et al. in reviews.)
  • We have researched hydrological and hydrological composition of the surface runoff of the Yenisey river and its tributaries, we have obtained new data on features of its formation.
  • Research of the carbon budget of the European continent will allow to understand how the climate is changing actually and how these changes affect lives of people, as well as to implement reasonable global climate policies.

Education and career development:

  • 3 doctoral dissertations and 2 candidate dissertations have been defended.
  • Members of the academic staff of the Laboratory have read lectures within the educational program of the Siberian Federal University for training students and postgraduates in such domains as dendrochronology, ecological biophysics of water systems, geochemistry of the environment and others.

Other results: Trees play a key role in the global water and carbon cycles providing main ecosystem services. However, the continuing climate change affects productivity of trees thus undermining these extremely important ecosystem services. In this regard, our results bear decisive importance for understanding reaction of trees to the environment and providing help in using proper measures in the field of forest management that would help to improve the state of forest and to increase productivity of trees in the setting of the continuing climate change.

Collaborations: Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape – WSL (Switzerland), French National Institute for Agricultural Research – INRA (France), University of Valladolid (France), University of Cádiz (Spain), University of the Andes (Venezuela), Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Germany), Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Austria): joint research and publications
