General information

Name of the project: Assessment of risks of natural disasters in coastal zones

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: ж, е, д

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Development of risk assessment methods for natural phenomena, complex multidisciplinary research of the Arctic

Project objective: Identification of mechanisms that define intensity of dangerous extreme phenomena in coastal zones of the European part of Russia.

The practical value of the study

  • As part of analysis of cyclonic activity we have developed new algorithms for tracking cyclones.
  • A new method has been developed to assess and forecast extreme hydrometeorological event.
  • We have created a model algorithm for analysis of extreme disturbances in coastal zones of Russian seas and formation of storm surges.
  • Our researchers have created a method for zoning of territories according to potential danger of dangerous hydrological events.
  • The Laboratory has proposed an original method of assessment if potential damage to objects of infrastructure inflicted by negative impact of natural emergencies.

Implemented results of research:

  • Our researchers have implemented the SWAN implemented spectral wave model that, if combination with the ADCIRC hydrodynamic model, allows to reconstruct storm surges in river estuaries – a technology that can be used to measure characteristics of flooding of estuary zones and accordingly plan protective measures.
  • The Laboratory has compiled maps indicating types, frequency of occurrence and parameters of dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena, maps of population structure and location of industrial institutions – data used in assessment of vulnerability and risks.
  • We has implemented a technology for evaluating of river runoff in the context of its spatial dispersion along streamflow of delta branches – hydrological computations.

Education and career development:

  • 3 doctoral dissertations and 6 candidate dissertations have been defended.
  • We have created two lecture courses and implemented them into the educational process for students of the masters program: «Modern measurement of the climate system», «Modern methods of oceanography information processing» (2014).

Organizational and structural changes:

  •  We have obtained network access to to the СRAY CX1 supercomputer, we are using 2 multi-core computation complexes and a data storage system for conducting model computations.
  • Our researchers are using field equipment and software needed for oceanography, hydrology, geodesy, glaciology research.

Other results:

  • The Laboratory has developed the series of maps «Water transportation. Hydrological limitations».
  • A methodology has been created for assessment of moisture content on the basis of the model of drainage formation models and remote probing data.
  • We have developed geocoded and quantitatively assessed limitations of aquaculture activities imposed by glacial regimes of rivers.
