General information

Name of the project: Cognitive psychology

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: ж

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Interdisciplinary research in education

Project objective: Creation of a world-class laboratory for conducting interdisciplinary research of the nature and mechanisms of formation of individual differences in cognitive and emotional processes, motivation and other characteristics related to education

The practical value of the study

  • We have created unique databases that allow to conduct research of bio-psycho-social factors of childhood development; cognitive and affective characteristics related to efficiency characteristics related to education; of neurophysiological processes. On the basis of these databases we are conducting longitudinal, interdisciplinary cross-cultural research.

Implemented results of research:

  • We have created and are testing new diagnostic platforms for applications in research and at all levels of educations. The platforms include diagnostics of aspects of cognitive activity, personal, motivational, and affective characteristics.
  • The Laboratory has created educational programs and methods that are used by partners of the Laboratory, including the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics Research of Human Health and Development (South Ural State University), the School of Arts of Humanities (Far Eastern Federal University) and the «Sirius» Education Center.
  • Obtained knowledge is integrated into the educational process and training of teaching pre-school, middle and high school teachers, we are conducting seminars in partner schools and universities on the grounds of the «Sirius» Education Center.
  • We are conducting work to popularization of knowledge in genetics in collaboration with TAGC – the Accessible Genetic Consortium.
  • The Laboratory is a center of coordination of activities in ethical activities of research, it also coordinates work of the Ethical Committee of Interdisciplinary Research, and conducts research and conducts research in ethical and legal aspects; in 2018 we initiated creation of the Science and Education Center«Institute of Law and Ethics» on the grounds of the Tomsk State University.

Education and career development:

  • One doctoral dissertation and two candidate dissertations have been defended.
  • In 2016 we developed the interdisciplinary masters program «Human Development: Genetics, Neuroscience and Psychology» (the course has been read in English for the «Psychology specialization at the Tomsk State University).
  • We have organized internships at leading Russian and foreign scientific foundations for members of the academic staff of the Laboratory, masters students studying at the program. As part of student mobility efforts we have organized education at masters programs of the University of Maastricht (the «Global education» program); education at the Ohio State University (scholarship from the President of the Russian Federation), at Goldsmiths, University of London («Erasmus+» international academic mobility program), at Summer Schools of Goldsmiths, the University of London, the International Society for Research of Intelligence (Saint Petersburg).
  • The Laboratory has organized short-term internships for members of the academic staff of the Laboratory at Goldsmiths, the University of London, King’s College, London (United Kingdom), Beijing Normal University (China PR), the University of Haifa (Israel), Saxion University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands), and the Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Education and others.
  • We have organized scientific and educational events: the International Summer Scientific School «Reasoning. Education. Knowledge. Genetics» (2012); the Science and Education Twin Festival Event for participants of the Russian School Twin Registry and their parents, the All-Russian Youth Conference «Modern Methods in Cognitive Sciences: from Gene to Behavior» (2012); the International Conference «Interdisciplinary approach to Research of Individual Differences in Education» (2013); the International Seminar «Genetically Informed Research of Neurophysiological Mechanisms of Mathematical Anxiety» (2014); the scientific seminar «Modern methods of EEG data analysis», in collaboration with the Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Education (2015); the conference of the International Society of Intelligence (15–17 July 2016, Saint Petersburg, Russia); the «Night of Science» event within the 4th Forum of Young Scientists U-NOVUS (2017); the the «Interdisciplinary Research of Human Development» symposium at the 7th Siberian Psychological Forum (2017).

Organizational and structural changes:

  • We have initiated the reaction of the International Network for Research in Child Health and Development that unites international laboratories and research groups. Several twin projects from the United Kingdom and the United States participate in INRiCHD.
  • The Laboratory has created the International Center for Research of Human Development at the Tomsk State University that united several laboratories: a laboratory for cognitive research in space exploration, a laboratory of cognitive research of language, a center for assessment of development programs and popularization knowledge on child development, as well as created the Science and Education Center«Institute of Law and Ethics»   in 2018.
  • We have created a partner laboratory for molecular and genetic research of human health and development on the ground of the South Ural State University.

Other results:

  • In 2015 we initiated the creation of the Accessible Genetic Consortium (TAGC).
  • Every year member of the academy staff of the Laboratory participate in such international and Russian events as the meeting of the Russian Psychological Society (Moscow, 14–18 February 2012), the annual conference of the American Educational Research Association (Vancouver, Canada,13–17 April 2012), the International Conference in Neurosciences in Mathematical Cognition and Education (Beijing, China PR, 14–17 June 2012), the 30th International Psychological Congress (South Africa, Cape Town, 21–28 July 2012), 13th Annual Conference of the International Society for Intelligence Research (USA, San Antonio, 13-15 December 2012); the International Conference of the Society for Research in Child Development (Seattle, USA, 18–20 April 2013); the 14th April International Conference in Problems of Development of Ecology and Society; the symposium «Genes and Environment in Education» (Moscow, 2–5 April 2013); the 13th European Congress of Psychology (Stockholm, Sweden, 8–13 July 2013); the 16th Conference of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences (Barcelona, Spain, 21–28 July 2013); the 14th Annual Conference of the International Society for Intelligence Research (Melbourne, Australia, 12–14 December 2013); the «Science of the Future» conference, «FENS Forum 2014», «EU-Russia Year of Science 2014», «Points of Growth of the Russian Science», the 15th Annual Conference of the International Society for Intelligence Research, the 17th European Conference on Personality, the 14th International Congress on Psychology; the 27th Annual Conference of the Association for Psychological Science; the 45th Annual Conference of the Association of Behavioral Psychology (San Diego, USA),the International Conference «Cognitive and neurocognitive Aspects of Abilities and Difficulties in Education (Haifa, Israel), «Building Bridges» Development of interdisciplinary science for the benefit of the society (London, United Kingdom).

Collaborations:
