Name of the project: Ferroics and heterostructures based on them for functional electronics

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamic processes in ferroics and heterostructures based on them, controlling state of nanostructures at the nanometer spatial and the picosecond temporal scales.

Project objective: Creation of a new research laboratory and training highly qualified staff for research of physical phenomena in ferroics. Development of principles pf creation of heterostructures in which a technologically set combination of magnetic, electric and elastic properties will allow to achieve record parameters in terms of latency, energy efficiency, miniaturization, information capacity, that are critical for development of components for modern electronics and spintronics.


The practical value of the study

Education and career development:

  • One doctoral dissertation and 5 candidate dissertations have been defended.
  • Internships at the Laboratory have been organized for students and postgraduates of Russian and German universities.
  • A new core department has been created at the Saint Petersburg University Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics – ITMO and the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences «Photonics of dielectrics and semiconductors» (2017). For masters degree students we have launched the «Linear and nonlinear magneto-photonics» course (2017-2018).
  • Our researchers regularly read lectures at universities of Saint Petersburg and work as visiting professors at universities of other cities and countries.
  • Member of the academic staff of the Laboratory participated in such science popularization projects as the All-Russian Initiative «Open Laboratory» (2018), the All-Russian Conference for Young Scientists «Far Horizons of Science» (2017, «Science Slam» (2018).

Organizational and structural changes: The created laboratory is a fully independent scientific division furnished with modern equipment that allows to solve a wide range of problems in ferroics physics.
