General information

Name of the project:

Developing technologies to creating new gradient materials and structures made of them based on laser additive technologies

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: а

Goals and objectives

Research directions:

Developing technologies to creating new gradient materials and structures made of them based on laser additive technologies

Project objective: Developing laser additive technologies to create gradient materials with set characteristics and products based on those materials for aircraft, vessel and automotive industry

The practical value of the study

  • We have conducted theoretical and experimental research as well as optimized processes of adaptive growing of products from powder materials. Results of the research have been used for developing a technology to create products from gradient materials with set characteristics.
  • A technology has been developed to substitute imported high quality powder materials for additive manufacturing.
  • We have developed and approbated equipment and technologies for high-precision manufacturing of products from metallic materials (including gradient materials) using highly productive laser additive technologies. The developed and patented method of laser-acoustic impact on processed material allows to significantly enhance strength qualities of products of adaptive manufacturing. Results of pour research have been used in aircraft, vessel and aircraft manufacturing.

Implemented results of research:

  • The technology of laser strengthening of die tooling has been implemented at the KAMAZ JSC.
  • The technology of plasma processing of heat resistant nickel alloy powders for laser additive technologies is used by Siemens.
  • The technology for replacing imported spherical zirconium oxide powder stabilized by yttrium. The powder is used in a domain that is critical for Russia – producing turbine blades for aircraft engines. It is used by the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials».

Education and career development:

  • 5 doctoral dissertations and 12 candidate dissertations have been defended.
  • We have developed main education programs for masters and bachelors, 20 lecture courses («Laser equipment», «Fiber lasers and fiber optic systems», «Operating laser systems», «Theory and design of laser systems», «Optical materials and technologies») and supplementary materials in the «Laser equipment and technology» domain.

Organizational and structural changes:

Using the Laboratory's equipment and under supervision of the Laboratory's staff bachelor and masters students majoring in «Laser equipment and technology» complete their training and conduct research in thematic sections (additive technologies, robotics).

Other results: New masters programs for «Additive technologies» majors have been developed.

Collaborations:

  • Bavarian Laser Center(Germany) (Germany), DIPI Laboratory of the National Engineering School of Saint-Étienne (France): student exchange, joint research
  • Siemens (Germany): 2 completed commercial contracts for R&D in additive technologies; Siemens provided licensed Siemens PLM Software to the Kazan National Research Technical University for free
  • Maicom Quarz (Germany): visits to production lines and research laboratories and the R&D Center of the Fraunhofer Institute upon invitation of the Maicom Quarz CEO Maicom Quarz who paid a reciprocal visit to Kazan and discovered capabilities of the Laboratory (the collaboration lead to signing an agreement on further collaborations)
  • Fraunhofer Institute (Germany): internships of students and employees of the Laboratory
  • All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials (Russia): participation in joint grant applications (Russian Scientific Foundation), joint publication, collaboration agreement
  • UEC Aviadvigatel (Russia): collaboration agreement
  • KAMAZ (Russia): R&D in implementing additive technologies into automotive manufacturing
  • IED-holding (Russia): industrial partnership in the domain of additive technologies and creation of powder materials
  • Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia): joint application for R&D in Complex plan for additive technologies for 2018–2025
  • Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (Russia): joint R&D «New digital technologies for modeling and creating functionally gradient materials and structures for additive manufacturing of details and nodes with variable structure, chemical composition and density»
  • Perm State National Research University (Russia): joint R&D in plasma processing of materials and laser processing of surfaces for creating controlled residual stress.
