General information

Name of the project: Wide format semi-transparent solar panels using stable persovskite architectures

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: б

Goals and objectives

Research directions:

Renewable energy sources and direct energy conversion systems

Project objective:

Solving the problem of degradation of perovskite for photovoltaics and implementation of scientific approaches in a wide range of devices

The practical value of the study

The Laboratory of Advanced Solar Energy under the supervision of professor Aldo Di Carlo performs active academic work for the development of a complete production cycle for printing perovskite solar batteries, tandem solar cells, and panels. We are also conducting research to solve fundamental problems of the stability of perovskite semiconductors employing new low-dimensional materials – MAXenes – and metal trisulfides for the passivation of interfaces and structural defects.

The project resulted in the design and creation of the physical and technological foundations of slot-matrix printing of perovskite thin-film solar cells with areas of over 100 cm2 and efficiency factors of 16 to 20 per cent. We have developed new approaches to the gas-phase deposition of thin-film structures based on chalcogenide perovskites as well as to the ion beam sputter deposition of semi-transparent solar cells. The achieved results has good prospects for renewable energy, integration with various portable electronic devices. The technology can also be translated to adjacent domains – detectors, LEDs etc.

Implemented results of research:

Developments made by employees of the Laboratory were marked with an award from the government of Moscow for young researchers. Scientific projects by Danila S. Saranin and Artur R. Ishteev advanced to the finals of the competition for innovators of Moscow in 2020. The patent «A hybrid photoconverter modified with MAXenes» was marked by the Federal Institute of Industrial Property as part of Top-100 patents of Russia.

Education and career development:

Members of the academic team actively participate in staff training and educational activities.

Professor Aldo Di Carlo is the scientific supervisor of two postgraduates of the National University of Science and Technology MISiS.

On 26 February 2019, the National University of Science and Technology MISiS and Tor Vergata University of Rome (Italy) signed an agreement on collaborative supervision of an individual research project with a subsequent award of the academic degree of Candidate of Science in Engineering.

The postgraduate Inga O. Ermanova and Pavel A. Gostishchev received a scholarships of the President of the Russian Federation in 2019 to study abroad and completed internships within the scholarship in 2020.

In 2919, the postgraduates Inga O. Ermanova and Pavel A. Gostishchev received a scholarship of the President of the Russian Federation to study abroad, completing their internships within the grant in 2020.

The postgraduates Sergey I. Didenko supervises the introduction of the new education programme «Physics of photoconverters» for master's degree students majoring in «Electronics & nano-electronics».

Denis S. Saranin has successfully defended his Candidate of Science in Engineering dissertation within the study programme «Technology and equipment for the manufacturing of semiconductors, materials, and devices in electronics».

During the period of the implementation of the project, six people were admitted to graduate schools.
