General information

Name of the project: New functional capabilities of glass and glass ceramics

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: а

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Materials sciences

Project objective: Creation of a world-class multi-profile laboratory that is able to solve a wide spectrum of scientific and applied problems in the domain of functional materials based on glass, determining nanoscale features of glass structure and search of ways of its controlled modification, development of functional glass-like and glass crystalline materials for knowledge-intensive applications in strategically important domain of medicine, photonics, integral optics, power industry, aircraft and space industries

The practical value of the study

  • We have created a tool chain for optical glass melting and production that allows to manufacture optically heterogeneous glasses in low volume crucibles with possibility of their subsequent nanostructuring.
  • Our researchers have produced a laser phosphate glass activate by neodymium with enhanced thermal optical characteristics, better radial strength and minimal passive absorption at the working wave length.
  • We have developed a magneto-optical glass with the record high Verdet constant (about 0.4 angular minutes/kiloOersted·centimeter at 632.8 nanometers).
  • We have developed an erbium ytterbium boron germanate glasses for active elements of lasers and fiber amplifiers working in the near infrared range of the spectrum.
  • We have developed glass nanostructures in the Me2O-Ga2O3-SiO2-GeO2-NiO system for wideband fiber amplifiers and reconfigurable lasers in the near infrared range, as well as for solar-blind visualizers of radiation in the middle ultraviolet range that glow in the blue field.
  • The Laboratory has developed huntite-like glass glasses with significantly suppressed segregation phenomena of the rare-earth activator that are promising for creation of small solid-state and fiber lasers and amplifiers.
  • We have developed nanostructured glasses in a quadratic nonlinear optical system with high quadratic nonlinear optical.
  • A technology has been developed to manufacture microspheres from yttrium aluminum glass, including those having a radioisotope-depleted barrier surface layer.
  • Our researchers have demonstrated good perspectives of producing segnetoelectric ceramics based on potassium sodium niobate from an amorphous precursor, we also developed methods of producing texturized glass-ceramics based on the LaBGeO5 segnetoelectric with high pyroelectric quality factor.
  • We have produced radio-transparent glass ceramics based on a strontium aluminosilicate system with working temperatures higher than 1200оС for application in space and aviation technologies, one of the roles being a matrix of high durability heat resistant components.
  • We have created a testing and manufacturing line and designed a technology for producing increased durability bands made of radiation-protected glass for thermoregulating coatings and protection of solar panels of spacecraft.

Implemented results of research:

  • We have conducted toxicology, radiation and clinical tests of the microsphere production line based on yttrium aluminosilicate glass production in collaboration with «Bebig» LLC.
  • The Laboratory was the first organization in Russia to obtain permission to use glass microspheres in medicine as a means of radiation delivery (β-radiation of the 90Y isotope) to human internal organs. Manufacturing such microspheres can completely cover the demand for spheroidized materials for brachytherapy in Russia.
  • Our researchers have begun mastering production of radio-transparent high-temperature glass ceramics with working temperatures higher than 1200оС for the aerospace industry at the State Research Center «Obninsk Research and Manufacturing Enterprise «Tekhnologiya».
  • Our researchers have started mass-manufacturing radiation-resistant glass film with increased durability for protective thermoleculating coatings and solar panels of spacecraft of companies of the Roskosmos corporation.
  • We have developed and implemented a low-melting flux glass insulation for hermetization and vacuum joining packages of integral circuits for NPO «Avtomatika».

Education and career development:

  • 10 candidate dissertations and 26 theses have (bachelor and master degree students) been defended.
  • We have developed and edited 15 lecture courses for bachelor, specialist and master degree students.
  • The Laboratory has provided additional training courses for employees of other organizations: «Glass ceramics with luminescence in the near infrared range», «Polyfunctional glass-based materials» (2010), «Nanostructuring and thermal polling of lanthanum-boron-germanate glasses», «Phase inhomogeneities in glasses» and «industrial glass melting technology» (2011), «Nano- and microinhomogeneities in glasses and methods of their investigation » (2012–2017).
  • Our staff have developed 6 methodological guidebook and course books.

Organizational and structural changes:

  • We have created «Optical Glass Center» LLC for industrial-scale implementation of achievements of the Laboratory.
  • Materials science (ceramics, composite materials, crystals) departments of the university have been involved in cutting-edge research and publications in high impact actor journals.
  • Contacts have been established between the University of Chemical Technology of Russia and industrial leaders and companies: JSC «Kompozit», NPO «Avtomatika», NPO «Lavochkin», the All-Russian Institute Of Aviation Materials, the Lytkarino Optical Glass Plant, NPO «Polyus», «Elektrosteklo» and others. At these organizations highly qualified professionals – graduates of the University of Chemical Technology of Russia – have found jobs, industrial cooperation and the scale of scientific and technological developments have strengthened.

Other results:

  • Regular collaboration with organizations of the glass industry and with consumers of research-intensive glass products (JSC «Research Institute for Technical Glass», JSC «Lytkarino Optical Glass Plant», the Obninsk Science and Manufacturing Enterprise «Tekhnologiya, JSC «Koplozit», NPO «Avtomatika», NPO «Lavochkin», LLC «Bebig» and others)
