Research directions: Study of interaction between plasma and materials of thermonuclear reactors and using plasma for technological purposes

Project objective:

- Experimental, theoretical and quantitative research of the most relevant and important problems of interaction of plasma with surfaces in thermonuclear devices

- Creating a laboratory furnished with modern equipment to unite science, education, research and development

- Developing plasma technologies of industrial utilization


The practical value of the study

  • We have conducted experimental research of spraying and re- precipitation of wall material as well as deuterium capturing by re-sprayed later including in dark regions of the JET tokamak.
  • We have conducted experimental research of interaction between hydrogen and radiation defects in wolfram using thermal desorption spectroscopy, nuclear reactions and Rutherford scattering.
  • Our researchers have research features of deuterium capturing and release in high pulsed plasma flow.
  • The Laboratory has conducted experimental research of co-precipitation of deuterium and lithium in the form of films after spraying lithium and capillary-porous structures in deuterium plasma.
  • We have conducted a cycle of experiments and quantitative computations to research reverse gas release and thermal desorption of deuterium under impact of low energy deuterium ions.
  • For the first time theoretical research has been conducted to explain the effect of anomalies in output of hydrogen after a plunge in tokamak.
  • We have conducted theoretical research of transfer in peripheral plasma in tokamaks.
  • We have conducted theoretical research of impact of gas recycling on tokamak chamber walls on plasma pedestal reconstruction after edge-localized instabilities in tokamaks.

  • We have conducted experimental research if redistribution of doping elements in steels titanium alloys after high temperature plasmonic nitrogenation.
  • The Laboratory has developed technologies of plasma strengthening of steels and titanium alloy.
  • The Laboratory has developed technologies for creating porous surfaces of titanium tooth implants.
  • We have researcher concentrations of ions and excited nitrogen atoms in mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen, helium and argon applied to the technology of plasmonic nitrogenation.
  • We have developed a technology of bulk modification of qualities of surfaces of porous materials in application to wetting properties and capacity if coal electrodes of supercapacitors.
  • We have studied discharges in tubes stimulated by coaxial electron beam.
  • We have developed a technology to apply transparent and attrition-resistant oleophobic coatings to protect surfaces of high energy efficiency glasses from mechanical damage and oil contamination.
  • We have created a complex for combined diagnostics of technological plasma using optical spectroscopy, mass-spectrometry and methods of gas analysis.
  • We have created a high frequency plasma device to process surfaces using spraying, pulse ion implantation during submersion into plasma and nitrogenation.

  • The Laboratory has modernized the super high vacuum thermal desorption test rig.
  • We have created a laboratory for specimen preparation for examination after technological processing in plasma.
  • We have created a metallography laboratory to research qualities of surfaces after applying coatings, nitrogenation and modification of surfaces that includes optical microscopy methods, electronic microscopy, measuring firmness and scratch-tests.

Education and career development:

  • We have conducted 5 international conferences: 18th-21st conferences «Interaction of plasma with surfaces» (2015-2018) where about 300 foreign scientists participated, and the 23rd International conference   «Interaction of ions with surfaces» (2017) that attracted about 200 Russian and foreign scientists.
  • We have conducted 4 international schools: 1st-4th International Summer School on the Physics of Plasma-Surface Interactions (2014, 2016-18), that were attended by 250 Russian and foreign researchers.
  • We have conducted the 5th International Symposium on Liquid Metals Applications for Fusion (ISLA-2017) that attracted 80 Russian and foreign researchers.
  • 1 doctoral dissertation, 9 candidate dissertations, 8 masters dissertations, 6 bachelors dissertations, 11 specialists dissertation have been defended.
  • We have created and implemented 5 courses. For bachelors: Seminar in physics in English (authored by A.A. Pisarev), Surfaces atomic collisions (authored by Yu.M. Gasparyan), Basics of С++ programming for physical applications (authored by E. D. Marenkov), Mathematical modeling of plasma processes (authored by E.D. Marenkov). For masters: Special chapters of plasma physics (authored by A.A. Stepanenko)
