General information
Name of the project: Experimental and theoretical research in heavy flavor physics.

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: а

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Experimental and theoretical research in heavy flavor physics.

Project objective:

Search for the New Physics and new exotic hadrons in the currently active Belle and Belle-II experiments at the SuperKEKB Superr B-factory and the CMS experiment on the LHC, development of phenomenology of supersymmetrical models and determination of promising methods of search for Supersymmetry and other extensions of the Standard model in experiments on B-factories at super=high energies

The practical value of the study

The main achievement of the implementation of the Project between 2018 and 2020 is the creation of a coordinated and highly qualified workforce that includes both experienced employees and young researchers. The core of the team is comprised of scientists of Heavy Quarks and Leptons Laboratory of the Lebedev Physical Institute, postgraduates of this Institute as well as scientists form other Russian institutes and universities, mainly from the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences – INP SB RAS, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute – MEPhI, the Higher School of Economics, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology – MIPT. The team is continuously reinforced with new young employees thanks to f strong collaboration with universities: 12 members of the team teach lecture courses at the MIPT, the MEPhI, and the Novosibirsk State University – NSU, and over three years of the implementation of the project, 12 bachelor's degree theses and 12 master's degree theses supervised by our staff members have been defended. One of the advantages of the created team is its versatility, theorists and experimentalists, who specialise both in experimental data analysis and in experimentation methods and electronics, work hand in hand. Over the period of the implementation of the project, the staff members have accumulated numerous results that are at the world-class level.

The implementation of the first stage of the project featured special attention to educational activities. Apart from teaching lectures and conducting seminars, participants of the Project supervise R&D of undergraduate and postgraduate students. A new training programme has been introduced. Over the period of the implementation of the project, two youth conferences and two schools of physics have been organised. Several young participants of the Project and students were sent to additional training at foreign youth schools.

Over the course of the implementation of the Project, close horizontal ties have been established with Russian research centres and universities: the INS SB RAS, the JINR, the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Moscow State University, Skoltech, the NSU, the MEPhI, the HSE, as well as with international centres: CERN (Switzerland), KEK (Japan), DESY (Germany), LAL (France), Hefei University (China PR), Ruhr University Bochum (Germany). All of this could be achieved by conducting major scientific events such as the RICH conferences, a super c-tau factory symposium, and youth conferences and schools of physics and thanks to the participation of employees of the Laboratory in Russian and international conferences conducted by our partners as well as by virtue of direct participation in the work of these centres and universities.

Using the grant funding and funding raised with invaluable help from the organisation we have created a work infrastructure: a local network has been created with a high computational capacity and a data storage system; two lecture halls for second to sixth year students have been furnished at the MIPT and the MEPhI that can also host seminars conducted by the Laboratory. We have renovated and equipped rooms for employees. An experimental laboratory that features state-of-the-art facilities and is ready for the conduct of scientific, engineering and construction research as well as for the production of detectors and for case studies of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The created laboratory is an important part of the innovative development programme of the Lebedev Physical Institute. During the implementation of the first stage of the project, it has already attracted investments. One example of those is an agreement with DESY worth €25 000 for R&D to manufacture scintillation plates by casting. Extensive connections with Russian and foreign centres allow to hope for further development of the created laboratory.

Education and career development:

In 2018, Prof. Eidelman implemented the course «‎Elementary particles and their sources» within the education programme «‎Physics of Fundamental Interactions and Elementary Particles» at Fiztekh-school of Fundamental and Applied Physics at the MIPT.

Within the project, in 2019, Doctor of Science in Physics and Mathematics, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail V. Danilov supervised a Candidate of Science dissertation entitled «B0s meson spectroscopy in the CMS experiment» defended by Sergey M. Polikarpov.

In 2019 and 2020, Schools of Physics were conducted for undergraduate and postgraduate students and young researchers.

12 members of the academic staff teach lectures at the MIPT, the MEPhI. and the NSU. From 2018 to 2020, 13 bachelor's degree theses and 13 master's degree theses were          been defended under the supervision of Laboratory staff members.

Organizational and structural changes:

The Laboratory has become the base for the professional training of students of the MIPT and the MEPhI.

Other results:

  • The Laboratory conducted the 10th International Workshop on Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detectors RICH2018, the 7th Youth Conference in High Energy Physics, Astrophysics and Methods of Particle Registration, and the Moscow International School of Physics.
  • The monograph «International Linear Collider (ILC) – the next mega-scale particle collider» under the editorship of Alexey G. Drutskoy was issued in 2018 (Concise Physics, Morgan & Claypool Publisher, California).
