General information

Name of the project: Programming gene transcription intermediated by CDK8: biological mechanism for medicine

Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development Priority Level: в

Goals and objectives

Research directions: Molecular biology, experimental oncology

Project objective: Determining fundamental mechanisms of action of CDK8/19 proteinkinases as a gene-specific regulators of programming transcription and determining the role of CDK8/19 in embryonic development, physiology of tissue and responses to exogenous signal in normal and tumor cells with researching model organisms and cell cultures (drosophila, mammals)

The practical value of the study

  • New data on mechanisms of regulation of regulation of gene transcription in drosophila and higher mammals.
  • Genetic structures for selective replacement of protein kinases CDK8/19 in genes to synthesize transgenic mice and to study reprogramming of transcription at the level of the organism.
  • Non-toxic selective low-molecular inhibitor for creating patentworthy clinical drug for tumor therapy.

Implemented results of research: Implementation of results will be facilitated during the later stages of the project. International patenting of inhibitors of tumor therapy in combination with existing medications is planned.

Education and career development:

  • Regular international of students and research fellows from the Institute of Gene Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, research institutes and universities Russia.
  • Professional training of foreign students (from postgraduate schools of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Kazan Federal University).

Organizational and structural changes:

  • The Institute of Gene Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences is furnished with new equipment including unique modern devices for working with chromatin.
  • The equipment pool of the Center of Collective Utilization has been reviewed. The extended vivarium of the Institute receives laboratory mice from international farms.

Other results:

  • Scientific and educational links with Russian universities have been established.
  • Masters trained by the Laboratory have enrolled into postgraduate schools.

Collaborations:

  • N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research (Russia): joint research and scientific events (4th all-Russian conference «Molecular oncology»), conducting joint experiments and seminars, career enhancement for young researchers in modern methods of experimental biology
  • Saint Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optic – ITMO (Russia): joint research, student exchange, scientific events, lectures by the leading scientist, collaborative experiments in the project's research domain, planned trips to the laboratory by the leading scientist (in 2019)
  • Moscow State University: joint research
